#OPENZFS LINUX DISTRIBUTION INSTALL#

I have an affinity to Fedora and eventually I will keep the zfs install of the Ubuntu 2010 system until it will be upgraded at 2021-04. Aside from the logon process, for what I do, I can't really distinguish between them. Its now about 2 weeks since I began using a half day of Ubuntu zfs and a half day of Fedora 33 with btrfs. My large Linux files are stored off the system onto two external drives.

Any non-zfs distro that I use usually runs in about 25gigs. The other negative aspect of using zfs as my desktop was/is the need for a dedicated disk. I could type abc on the terminal and it would only appear about 1/4 of a second later. The (all) I/O is queued and done in clumps. That direct logon really does not appear. To use terminal mode, I must log in to the system using "Gnome", and then enter terminal mode. I am led to believe that "zfs" is more robust than is "btrfs".īut Ubuntu still has problems with terminal mode. I noted that zfs performances improved to where there is no apparent difference in response time between Fedora with btrfs and Ubuntu with zfs. I make use of the clang compiler, git, make, firefox, vim, bash, meld, and some other packages. I believe it is due to the cache memory beginning to hold blocks of my most used programs and Linux kernel stuff. But after a few hours of use, response times improved significantly. I noted that when the system was rebooted after a new installation, response times were shaky and slow. Whats the experience thus far? Ans: It has not crashed since my 8hrs/day 14 day use. I had a 120 gig ssd and as we say, "I bit the bullet!" and installed Ubuntu 2010 with zfs onto that SSD. A) You are stuck with a long term not-upgradable kernel and b) the Ubuntu zol (zfs on linux) requires an entire disk. That is the positive information concerning my wanting an "easy" repairable file system. Ubuntu 2010 has a zfs file system option. I read the zfs docs, looked at all the zfs information on YouTube and elsewhere, and decided, zfs was the way to go. And it is only possible if the kernel had some zfs interface.

The only significant linux distribution using zfs was ubuntu 2010. That led me to looking at zfs (or openzfs). For the past two weeks, ever since my Fedora system started to act up after a few hours of use, I decided I needed a distribution that could be very crash resistant.
