It's also nice that this is a RARE car, so it set you apart right away.Īs for the 3 hatch, it beats the MSP and just about evey other car in this class (and some cars in other classes as well) when it comes to styling. The A/C in the MSP is much better than the 3, if you live in a hot place like Florida, you know what I mean. The Kenwood stereo in the MSP is great but a little outdated by now and the rear deck mounted sub woofer setup rattles just a bit, something you can fit easily.
You wouldn't think the brakes could do much by the looks of them but they are so well balanced and will toss you thru the windshield in an abrupt stop! The suspension is harder in everyday driving but if you hit the road courses every now and then it very much worth it.
Your question was like asking a parent to choose between his kids! I love the MSP for the turbo performance and definately the handling. My wife and I own both a SunLight Silver MazdaSpeed Protege and a 3 Hatch. Good luck with your decision, once again, I am not knocking the 3's performance by any means (I will be buying one) but I give credit where credit is due for that msp, it's a sick ride. and $22k (US) is as high as I will pay out the door. I will be buying a 3 in fall because I need a warranty when I get a car and I do not want to wait for the mazdaspeed 3 since there is no official timetable not too mention no price for it yet. However the 3 (obviously my opinions on looks): has a newer and better exterior style, warranty, nicer interior, and it's still really fun but not as performance orientated. Overall the msp is cheaper, has a complicated but cool stereo with a built in amp and sub in trunk, faster, better handling, a lot more easily modded, but most likely no warranty and some would consider the ride a bit harsh. what that means is he now has a turbo that creates another psi or two of boost which means a bit more hp for very cheap (probably more than an intake and exhaust combined would do on the 3's engine for hundreds and hundreds less). My friend added a $5 spring to the wastegate to increase pressure before it opens. Go to or and look up articles on the mazdaspeed protege, its 0-60 is like 6.9, handling is in a class that belongs with 30k+ sports cars and because its turbocharged you could spend very little to make it go very fast. You want a little more sophistication, newer body style, and still have a ride that will be fun then go with the 3. You want better performance than buy a used ms protege if you can find one. I have driven both so its my opinion and the opinion of automotive magazines. the msp may only have 10 hp more but it also has more torque (160) and a bad ass suspension that the 3 cannot even match. My friend owns a ms protege and its way different than a 3, "only 10 hp less" is very misleading. I have found a couple on Ebay, one of which still has a warranty (owner bought 72 mo extended), i am not sure how much extended warranties cover but hey its something. You obviously know a little bit about them like they are discontinued (the 3 IS the new protege) and you can find a couple used. I don't know about what moondogmurf knows about mazdaspeed protege's, but i do know a bit about them.
